along the road

W ostatnim poście obiecałam kontynuowanie relacji z moich podróży podczas pobytu na Erasmusie. Dlatego dzisiaj opiszę jeszcze trzy wyjazdy z tamtego czasu.
--
In the last post I have promised to continue telling you about my trips during my stay on Erasmus. Therefore today I am going to write about tree more trip from that time.

Zaanse Schans and Volendam

Pisząc o listopadowych wyjazdach zapomniałam wspomnieć o Zaanse Schans i Volendam - dwóch miejscowościach w północnej części Holandii, które odwiedziłam z utrechckim ESN-em.
W pierwszym z nich można zobaczyć to, z czym większości ludzi kojarzą się Niderlandy - chodaki i wiatraki (choć jeśli chcecie podziwiać te drugie polecam raczej Kinderdijk). Jednak większość osób pomijała standardowe modele i szła w stronę najciekawszych eksponatów.
--
Writing about my trips in November I forgot to mention Zaanse Schans and Volendam - two towns in the north part of the Netherlands which I visited with the ESN Utrecht. Although they are typically touristic places, I think that it is possible to find some advantages of them.
In the first of them you can see the things which the majority of people associate the Netherlands with - clogs and windmills (but if you want to see the second ones is better to go to Kinderdijk). We started from inconspicuous museum of clogs (klompenmuseum). The historical pairs of these kind of shoes were exposed together with the pictures of the whole families wearing them (usually on the thick woollen socks). But many people were skipping the standard models and going to the most interesting ones.

--
Although the clogs - ice skates were used be the Dutch people in the past, there were some models in the showcases which were made only for fun or as the works of art.

--
In Zaanse Schans both the houses and the windmills were painted at the same colours - black or dark green. Although it looked very unnaturally, it also created a fairy-tale atmosphere.

Wiatraki były malowniczo położone nad samą wodą, a w jednym z nich - Molen de Kat - znajdowało się muzeum, w którym starszy pan z fajką w ustach opowiadał o mechanizmie działania wiatraków.
--
The windmills were picturesquely located just next to the water and in the one of them - Molden de Kat - there was a museum in which an old man with a pipe in his mouth was telling the story of how the windmill works.

Jednak do plusów Volendam trzeba zaliczyć jedzenie - pyszne i świeże owoce morza i ryby, które można dostać w niemal każdej restauracji.
--
Volendam welcomed us with the rain or rather the downpour. It was raining and we had plenty of time to wander through the tiny streets of the former fishing town. There were no monuments. An old man who was our guide really wanted to show interesting places in Volendam but we visited together only the oldest hotel. And the houses had mostly the same appearances and were painted the same way.
But the good side of Volendam was definitely food - you can get tasty and fresh sea food and fish in almost every restaurant.

The South Expedition

--
I mentioned in the last post that two from the all car trips we had made with my international friends during our stay on Erasmus were the most spontaneous. The first was the trip on the north of the Netherlands - to Groningen and to Schiermonnikoog island and the second one to the south of the country. Situation with the second trip was the same as with the first one - D. said that there is on the south some famous storm surge barrier which it would be nice to see. It wasn't necessary to convince us for a long time.

--
We were very lucky because it was the first part of January, there was no rain and even the sun was shining and the temperature was good. Maybe because of these conditions we hadn't discussed much when we saw the sign informing that there is a beach nearby our road - we just turned in that direction.

--
The beach was beautiful. I had never seen before such big beaches (I mean the distance between the dunes and the sea) as in the Netherlands. And I had never been on the beach in January. And on that Sunday in January the atmosphere on the beach was just great - some people were sitting around the tables and drinking chocomel (hot chocolate milk which is a hit during the autumn and winter in the Netherlands), other were walking across the beach or playing with their dogs. D. had a volleyball ball in his boot so we were playing beach volleyball and enjoying the sun.

Naładowani energią wróciliśmy do samochodu i pojechaliśmy w stronę naszego celu - bariery przeciw sztormowej Oosterscheldekering, między wyspami Schouwen-Duiveland i Noord-Beveland. Po drodze zmieniał się krajobraz. Przyzwyczajeni do idealnie utrzymanych pól lub wiosek z małymi domkami, byliśmy zdziwieni mijając spore obszary wypełnione jedynie ogromnymi zakładami przemysłowymi i fabrykami.
--
We came back to the car (full of new energy) and continued going toward our goal - the storm surge barrier Oosterscheldekering which is located between the islands Schouwen-Duiveland and Noord-Beveland. On our way there the views were changing a lot. We were used to the well-kept fields or villages with small houses. Therefore we were astonished seeing big parts of the land with huge industrial building or factories.
Although Oosterscheldekering wasn't very special in case of the architecture, it was worth seeing it because of its history. 13 impressive constructions of dams and storm surge barriers are the part of Delta Works - a plan which was written before 1953 and had an aim to create the system of dams and storm surge barriers in different parts of the Netherlands to protect that country  from flooding from the North Sea. But they started realising that plan much more earlier, due to the huge flood in 1953.

Maastricht

Podróż z środkowej Holandii do jej południowego krańca zajęła nam zaledwie dwie godziny.
--
I went for the last trip during my half-year stay in the Netherlands by train! I put an exclamation mark because it was one of not many times I had decided for that transport. But I did it because sometimes it is possible to buy a day ticket for trains for around 20 euro (in case of the prices of the Dutch train tickets it is really cheap) in shops such as Kruidvat or Hema.
Because of that reason me and my friend T. decided to go to Maastricht. The journey from the middle of the Netherlands to its southern end took us only two hours. After getting off the train we bought a coffees and not knowing where to go we just go ahead. That was a good choice.

W krótkim czasie doszliśmy do centrum i znaleźliśmy informację turystyczną.
--
After a short walk we came to the city centre and found the tourist information. That was our priority because we wanted to get to know how to go to the fort - a place which was one of the main goals of our trip. We bought the tickets and decided to walk slowly towards the fort because it was some time until our visiting was supposed to start. On our way we had to go to the famous bookshop in the church (Boekhandel Dominicanen) which is very impressive. For me - the person coming from the country where churches fulfil their primary role or perish - it was astonishing to see people eating lunch in presbytery.

Po wejściu do jeszcze kilku (prawdziwych) kościołów, zobaczeniu rynku, podziwianiu kamienic (były inne niż w częściach Holandii, które znaliśmy - wyższe i smuklejsze, wyglądem zbliżone do belgijskich) dotarliśmy do wzgórza, w głębi którego znajdował się Fort Sint Pieter
--
After entering some more (real) churches, visiting the main square, admiring the townhouses (there were different than the ones in the parts of the Netherlands we had known - higher and they looked more like the Belgian ones) we came to the hill in which there was Fort Sint Pieter.

Korytarze powstały w wyniku wydobywania z wzgórza wapienia, potrzebnego do budowy dobudowy niektórych kościołów w Maastricht.
--
In that place we wanted to visit the underground corridors. We met with the guide who was supposed to lead us through them. And here very nice thing - all visitors, besides us, were Dutch, but they agreed to have the trip in English just only for us two!
The corridors were made as an effect of quarrying limestone which were needed to build some churches in Maastricht. And now it is possible to visit them but only with the guide. And that is one of the places in the Netherlands that I would definitely recommend to visit. The guide tells interesting stories, illuminates using his torch some nice wall paintings and in the middle of the trip he turns of the light and all people have the chance to check how will they deal with the total darkness.

--
As I mentioned at the beginning - there were the last stories from my Dutch adventure. In the next posts I will tell you about my other travels in 2014 and in the meantime I will think about journeys for upcoming year. I can't wait to visit new places!

Out on the road

--
This time I will write about my trips across the Netherlands and Belgium which we did together with my friends during our Erasmus. We were traveling by the car of our friend from Germany and it was the most economical option because traveling by buses and train in the Netherlands (but also in Belgium) is quite expensive.

GLOW Eindhoven

 --
Before writing about our car trips I will start with the trip to Eindhoven which I had done with the local ESN. This city or rather its airport I had known before because I flew to it from Poland. But I didn't hear anything interesting about the rest of the city. Majority of people that I talked with about Eindhoven were describing it as a place full of post-industrial building which probably tries to be called as the Dutch capital of design. But we didn't come there to admire the architecture neither the local design. Our goal was GLOW- the festival of light.

--
Together with my friends we took some maps from the information point but due to the small amount of time we could spend in Eindhoven we just went ahead in direction of some lights. But it went well - we saw some villas which thanks to the lights transformed into great oriental residences. We saw also the monster which thanks to the lights 'surfaced' from the fountain, some artificial shining trees and we watched a great show of the light animation on the wall of the cathedral.

Leiden

Wycieczka do Lejdy wyszła całkiem spontanicznie.
--
The trip to Leiden was completely spontaneous. Me and tree of my friends had a free day so we jumped into the friend's car and set off to the West. The weather wasn't perfect for sightseeing but it is usually like that in the Netherlands so we had already got used to that. We didn't planned our trip so after finding the city centre we just went ahead (as usually). But we found that way the citadel which was the highest point we had been to in the Netherlands (I suppose that higher located is only Fort Sint Pieter in Maastricht). We needed only a bit more than 20 steps to reach it. Although it was raining, after getting there we could admire typical Dutch panorama of the city (charming, not so high buildings).

--
Then we were moving deeply into the centre so as it usually is in the Dutch city - towards the main canal. We made some pictures quickly and escaped to the nearest cafe - that time the rain won.

--
But we didn't lose our enthusiasm - we warmed up, dried our clothes a bit and then we started discovering the city again.

Belgium - Antwerp, Bruges, Gent

--
Here - I have to admit - it wasn't so spontaneously. I insisted that I have to visit Belgium being so close to it. I had different ideas - to hitchhike there, to go by train or by bus. I resigned from the first option because the weather was capricious and I would soak staying next to the road. Next options were too expensive. Therefore I started to persuade my friends to join me. We formed to trip team just the day before leaving Utrecht. D. offered that we can go by his car and me and B. started looking for the hostels. The choice one of them turned out to be... interesting.

Przejechaliśmy ją kilka razy i nic.
--
After around three hours ride we arrived in Antwerp. As always we didn't have the city map but using some gps we found the street on which our hostel was supposed to be. We went across it several time but we couldn't find it. No banner at the building, no name at the wall. We got off the car and started looking for it building by building.  We passed by three Polish shops went we finally noticed some small writing - Boomerang - next to the doors of some building. Later we were laughing that it is maybe better that the hostel is not marked in the proper way because there is a chance that less people will stay in it. Why? The hostel hadn't been cleaned for longer time, there were some people smoking in the common room, there were some whole in the stairs steps, in the boys' dorm the fire alarm was constantly beeping and there were also mushrooms growing in the bathroom..
 --
--
The city wasn't clean too. I was expecting that a bit after watching the piles of the rubbish bags in the city centre of Brussels. Fortunately it wasn't so many rubbish in Antwerp, but my friend stepped on the brown you know what (and it wasn't rather animal but the human one;)). But the was something which was supposed to impress me and it impressed - the train station. Honestly that was a reason I wanted to come to Antwerp. Among some houses finally I saw it - beautiful, baroque and monumental building. And inside of it one could feel like in some temple!

--
There were only two more things which impressed me in Antwerp - the chocolate factory and the great hospitality of one Polish man. After the whole day of sightseeing we felt very cold so I suggested that we can sit for a while inside of some university building. There was a bar from which I heard some conversations in Polish. Therefore I went there to ask if they have still something to eat (it was around 9 pm). The barman started to translate a menu from Flemish into English for us. And when we ordered the sandwiches he offered that he will give us big plate of spaghetti in the price of small instead (because his boss wasn't there). But that wasn't the end! After spaghetti he brought us the tray full of sandwiches. And when I was saying: thank you for everything he said he will bring be the best beer he has!
I was very happy that my friends could get to know the real Polish hospitality!

(o miejsca do spróbowania tych ostatnich warto pytać przypadkowych Belgów - my świetnie trafiliśmy w ten sposób)
--
I could write a lot about Bruges and all of these words would express the admiration. It is beautiful city where the time stops in the Middle Ages. Small buildings made of brick, small canals with the trees and the wild ivy on the both sides of them, monumental city buildings and churches. But Bruges is also full of great tastes - of omnipresent chocolate products, waffles and famous Belgian beers! (it is worth asking some random Belgian people about the nice place to try them - we found a great place and beers that way)

--
In my opinion also in the case of that place is better not the use the guide books and just let yourself get lost among the tight streets of Bruges. (but you can't forget about climbing the tower Beffroi which is located at the main square!)

Ale dzięki USE-IT - darmowej mapie miasta (korzystaliśmy z nich też w dwóch poprzednich) trafiliśmy do najciekawszych zaułków.
--
We didn't have a lot of time in Gent, because we were sleeping too long after beer tasting the day before. But thanks to USE-IT - a free city map (we were using it also in Bruges and Antwerp from time to time) we found the most interesting corners. But before that we just had to see the panorama of the city from Beffroi (the same type of a medieval tower, which is also in Bruges) !

Dalej 'localsi' (bo to oni tworzą te mapy) zaprowadzili nas w najbardziej kolorowy, grafficiarski zaułek - "graffitistraatje".
--
Then 'locals' (because they create this map) leaded us to the most colourful graffiti corner - "graffitistraatje".

Stamtąd trochę przy pomocy mapy, trochę intuicyjnie kierowaliście się do naszych 'must-see' w każdym belgijskim mieście - rynku, krętych uliczek, zamku i głównego kanału.
--
From there we were to our must-see in every Belgian city - the main square, tight streets and the main canal.

The North - Schiermonnikoog and Groningen

--
It was one of two the most spontaneous trips we had made. One evening we were eating langos (delicious and the original ones, because they were made by our Hungarian friend) when D. said that there is some Dutch island at the North Sea. In general there aren't any monuments, but he said he really want to see it. I wanted to visit Groningen so we decided we will connect it. And after a few days me, D. and two more friends were on our way to the north of the Netherlands. We arrived in Lauwersoog from where (without the car) we went by ferry to Schiermonnikoog. The weather was perfect so we spent most of the cruise outside, then we came inside where it was very cosily and comfortably

--
Although the islands didn't have any monuments, special animals or plants, it impressed me a lot. It would be possible to walk through the whole island during one day but it was getting dark quickly (it was the end of November) so we decided to walked across only some part of it. I was taking a lot of pictures and admiring the island a lot maybe because it was the first island I had ever been to.

In the centre of the island it turned out that the inhabitants are waiting for the Santa Claus (Sinterklaas) arrival. The Santa Claus day in the Netherlands (5th of December) is a very important event, as I could observe, even more important than Christmas. The decorations in the shops appeared at the beginning of October. The Santa Clauses didn't dominate among them, but the Black Peters (Zwarte Piet). According to the legend, Santa Claus comes from Spain by sea and on the boat apart from him there are also his helpers - Black Peters. What is interesting - they are famous more than Santa Claus sometimes because Dutch people dress up as them frequently. Celebrating the Santa Claus day is connected also with eating kruidnoten and pepernoten and the parade organised for the arrival of Santa Claus. The last event didn't have the steady date. Santa Claus had already arrived in Utrecht when on Schiermonnikoog he appeared together with us (23rd of November).

Sama wyspa (w zabudowanej części) była uroczym i spokojnym miejscem.

The island itself (in the built-up part) was a charming and calm place.

I can write about Groningen that it is the most party place I have ever been to. But it is nothing weird in that when, probably the 80% of the population of it are the students. On the evenings most of them come to the city centre which is full of different bars and clubs. There are even the special city cloakrooms where they can leave their stuff to move more freely from one club to another. And when they get hungry there are tasty french fires with the seasonings inside of them (probably the best french fires I have ever eaten!) in the small bars with the food.
I have also to add that the centre of Groningen is completely closed for the cars!

We had also very interesting couchsurfing host in Groningen. J. is half Dutch and half Scottish student of marine biology. He rides race bicycle (the one with an extra thin wheels), ice skates, works as a medical help during the ice skating competition and make the pictures during the dancing competitions. The conversations with him were very fascinating!

In the next post I will write about the rest of my trips across the Netherlands.
